Philippe Karl Open Clinic ~ 2009. Equestrian journalist and NCAS instructor Anna Marsden from Canberra was one of the many spectators to travel to Bathurst, New South Wales to watch Philippe Karl at work. Anna was very impressed by the clinic with such immense information about horsemanship, classical principals of correct dressage and the how's and why's of horses and their motion differences.

Nicole Weinauge 2009 Clinic ~ Spectator and Rider Viewpoints.
"It opened my eyes to softness from yet another perspective. As someone who is disillusioned with 'competitive' Dressage and what it does NOT do for the horses health and well-being, I was entranced by the soft, if unique, methods on display. I like the new(ish) breed of 'natural' horsemanship that is rapidly taking off across the globe, and I think Philippe Karl's methods dovetail very neatly into this. Philippe Karl is a true horseman, who cares first and foremost about the welfare of the horse, not about winning ribbons, or being seen to be a 'winner' in the traditional sense, which in my eyes makes him a true winner ~ and all those who train under him and spread his word." Fran Luke, Keysbrook, Western Australia.
"Learning the Philippe Karl way of riding is a chance in a lifetime, you experience a relationship with your horse that is so amazing you can't describe it. The clinic in April was so fantastic I have enrolled in the November one." Tara McGregor, Wattle Grove, Western Australia.
Sylvia Stössel 2009 Clinic ~ Spectator and Rider Viewpoints.
"This four day clinic was a revelation of how the rider can improve their rein contact with the horse and the positive effect that this has on the posture of the horse. Sylvia gave very clear instructions on how to achieve the flexions that are described by Philippe Karl in his book Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage.
Lateral work was also used to assist the horse to activate their joints and become straighter in their body. The rider was given the tools to correct a horse with a tendency to tuck their nose behind the vertical, ensuring an open gullet and a balance shift to the hind quarter. As well as teaching the fundamentals of the flexions, Sylvia was very good at giving clear instructions to each rider on what their own horse needed most in that moment.
It was fascinating to watch the different emphasis given to horses with different conformation and training backgrounds. All the riders were to become familiar with the phrase "… and now, let him do." In other words, the idea is not for the rider to always be lifting, carrying, creating; it is to create the preconditions for balance and good carrying posture, then let the horse get on with the job. At the first opportunity, the rider does less and less, and it is through this approach that the horse becomes lighter and lighter to all the aids.
Particular emphasis was on addressing the horse's crookedness and performing simple exercises to help the horse develop straightness. A lot of the riders would become familiar with the exercise of riding counter flexed circles, to ensure that the horse did not over-weight a particular shoulder. This helped many horses become more even.
Anyone not familiar with the flexions described by Philippe Karl could be forgiven for thinking that this method is all about being busy with the hands, and this certainly can be a trap for the rookie. However, Sylvia's emphasis was all about helping the horse discover a new, more comfortable body state - setting him up, then letting him carry himself. I'm personally looking forward to Sylvia coming out this way again!" Kelly Whitfield, Western Australia.
"Sylvia's lessons were just fantastic. I have been to many foreign instructors in the past who claim to know and teach dressage, but Sylvia has a true understanding. This combined with her knowledge of Iberian horses made my lessons with her unforgettable!" Rebecca McDonnell, Western Australia.
"I was one of the lucky spectators to witness this amazing lady work with a variety of horse and rider combinations. Her depth of knowledge and understanding of Philippe Karl's system is formidable. To watch the improvement in the gaits of the horses over the four days and to see that the horses were happy and relaxed in their work was something not to be missed. Harmony between horse and rider is what we all hope to achieve. This system teaches you this the correct way for the horse with NO force. Thank you Sylvia for sharing such wonderful knowledge." Sandra Liddle, Busselton, Western Australia.
