The brilliant Sylvia Stössel from Switzerland will be training the 16 selected riders twice per year, April and August and Philippe Karl himself will come once per year in December.
Sylvia has been training with Philippe Karl and his wife Bea Borelle since the onset of the School of Légèreté's popular clinics around Europe eight years ago. She is an insightful teacher with the gift of teaching the all important FEEL.
Sylvia's credentials boast a Level Four Licensed Teacher Certificate out of a possible five levels. She is one of only two to achieve this!

Likened to a University Course, each rider learns what is required for each individual horse and a heavily laid foundation of the classical principles is put down in the first year. Once the basic fundamentals of lightness to the aids, longitudinal and lateral balance and sideways movements are achieved, the riders go on to deeply study and understand the aids and exercises required to set the horses up for future success in flying changes, Piaffe, Spanish walk and passage.
There is a science to the aids whereby the horse and rider are taught the fine communication between the hand and the mouth. FEELING the horses' mouth in the fingertips is crucial to lightness and relaxation and is paramount from the early stages. Balance is addressed at all times with correct positioning of the horses' head, neck and shoulders in halt and in forward motion; extending the neck with the nose in front of the vertical is constantly required. Closing the horses' poll comes absolutely LAST; and only when asked for by the rider, not offered by the horse.

Riders on the 3 year course
Those who participate in the three year course sit an exam in the fourth year, passing based on their expertise in four areas.
1. The skill and level of movement they have reached with their horse
2. Their understanding of theory in a written exam
3. A forty five minute lesson given to one of their own students showing the level they have attained by teaching them throughout the course
4. The pedagogy lesson. They teach an unknown Guest rider in front of Philippe Karl who they've never met. Teaching the unknown rider shows whether they are able to analyse the situation and impart the correct solutions required to help any horse and rider in the quest of balance, lightness, softness within the correct fundamentals of the classical principles.
